SWAMP – Sustainable Water Management Under Pressure in Ethiopia

“Sustainable Water Management under Pressure in Ethiopia” (SWAMP) is a University-Business partnership
Project between higher education institutions and business partners in Germany and Ethiopia. It is part of the special initiative of training and job creation funded by the German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD), with funds from the federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Our postgraduate degree program in Hydrology and Sustainable Water resource Management will offer a
comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle complex water challenges. With a strong focus on hydrological processes, sustainable practices, and
integrated water resource management, our program prepares students to become future leaders in the field.
Through a combination of theoretical coursework, practical fieldwork, and hands-on research projects, students gain a deep understanding of hydrological systems, learn to analyze and model water resources, analyses flood and drought, and develop innovative solutions for sustainable water management. With faculty experts, advanced
facilities, and collaborations with industry partners, our program provides an immersive learning experience that
empowers students to make a meaningful impact on the world’s water challenges.

Global Digital Health Exemplars

  • The Center for Global Digital Health Innovation (CGDHI) based at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and eHealth Lab Ethiopia based at the University of Gondar is working with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to understand which countries have been able to successfully leverage digital solutions to transform PHC service delivery – and the facilitators and challenges experienced in their paths. This work is part of the larger Exemplars in Global Health initiative. To support this work, we are engaging stakeholders from countries that can benefit from the findings and adapt them for their country contexts.

EMR Development and Implementation

  • In the past many years, Ethiopia had made efforts to implement EMR systems at various public health facilities. However, the implementation efforts have been unsuccessful in all but a few health facilities. Training and follow-up, lack of management commitment, poor ICT infrastructure, and hardware and software-related issues were presumed to be the challenges that contributed to the EMR implementation failure. In addition, the absence of a national EMR implementation roadmap that guides the overall EMR implementation had contributed to the implementation failure of EMR systems.
