Mechanical Engineering department came in to existence following the structure of Gondar universityinstitute of technology. Currently, the department has developed four streams for Undergraduate Programsnamely (Thermal Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Design and, AutomotiveEngineering). Beyond this it has two Postgraduate Programs running now (namely ManufacturingEngineering, Thermal Engineering). New UG and PG programs will be opened based on the needs of thecountry in the years to come. The department of Mechanical engineering is aimed at producing skilledprofessionals on the areas of Automotive Industries, Metal and Agricultural machine and equipmentmanufacturing industries which highly contribute for the economic development and transformation of thecountry. As mentioned above the department running two masters programs for the current time, and whenwe see the programs:
1. Manufacturing Engineering
The aim of this program is to enable students to develop a thorough understanding of engineering designand manufacturing principles and apply that understanding to the manufacture of products, processes orsystems at an overall or detail level. Modern manufacturing technologies are thoroughly explained.Modules on design, processes, methods, tooling, CAD/CAM, planning and management are the core of theprogram. This program ensures application of appropriate manufacturing processes and cost effectiveutilization of manufacturing tools, materials, equipment and manpower to manufacture parts. The programprovides graduates with a unique blend of theoretical and hands-on-knowledge with computer integrationin a manufacturing environment that directly corresponds to modern applications used in industry.Graduates are employed in a wide variety of areas relevant to manufacturing industries.
- Thermal and Aerospace Engineering
Thermal engineering is a branch of engineering that applies scientific knowledge to the design,
manufacturing and operation of thermal and flow equipment’s and systems. The fundamental principles ofthermal engineering apply to all equipment’s and systems that involve, heat generation, heat transfer, cooling, heating, and fluid flow such as pumps, compressors, turbines, fans, blowers, boilers, refrigerators, air conditioners and so on. The fundamental mechanical engineering courses are supplemented withadditional fluid mechanics courses to include compressible flow and aerodynamics; additionalthermodynamics, turbo machinery, refrigeration engineering, air conditioning engineering, design of heatexchangers and the likes.
